O kody pocztowe
Postal codes are a twentieth-century answer to a nineteenth-century problem: as mail volumes grew, sorting by written address became the bottleneck, and sorting by a short code that a machine could read did not.
Britain moved first in a limited way. London was divided into postal districts in 1857 — the EC and WC that still survive — and the scheme was extended with numbered subdivisions in 1917. Germany introduced a national two-digit system in 1941. The United States added Zone Improvement Plan codes in 1963, which is where the acronym ZIP comes from, and the ZIP+4 extension followed in 1983 to identify a specific block or building.
The United Kingdom's full alphanumeric postcode rolled out nationally between 1959 and 1974, and it is by some distance the most intricate format in common use. A postcode splits into an outward code identifying a sorting area and an inward code identifying a delivery point, and the outward code alone has six legal shapes. Certain letters are excluded from certain positions because they are too easily confused when handwritten or read by machine — Q, V and X never begin a postcode, and C, I, K, M, O and V never appear in the final pair.
That intricacy is why UK postcode validation is a well-known source of software bugs. Developers routinely write a regex that rejects legitimate addresses, and the format is irregular enough that even official guidance has carried patterns with errors in them. Canada's format has similar exclusions and a similar reputation.
The codes are also geography. Because a UK postcode resolves to roughly fifteen addresses, it functions as a fine-grained location identifier, and postcode-level data underpins a great deal of census analysis, insurance pricing and electoral work.
Najważniejsze właściwości
- The codes here are structurally valid but not guaranteed to be assigned — they test a parser, not a delivery route.
- UK postcodes exclude Q, V and X from the first position, and C, I, K, M, O and V from the final two letters, to avoid misreading.
- Canadian postal codes omit D, F, I, O, Q and U throughout, and additionally W and Z from the first position.
- ZIP+4 narrows a US ZIP code to a specific block, building or large recipient, rather than a whole area.
- ZZ99 is Royal Mail’s non-geographic range, used for overseas and unknown addresses and reserved from ordinary allocation.
- Generation is seeded, so the same seed and country always return the same list — a shared link reproduces it exactly.
- Several countries, including Ireland before 2015, managed without a national postal code system at all.
Gdzie się pojawiają
- Address form validation, which is where most developers meet postal-code regexes and where most of them get the UK format wrong.
- E-commerce checkout and shipping-rate calculation, which route on the postal code before any other address field.
- Census and statistical geography: UK output areas and US ZIP Code Tabulation Areas are both built on postal boundaries.
- Insurance and credit pricing, where postcode-level risk models have repeatedly raised questions about proxy discrimination.
- Test fixtures and seed data for any application that stores addresses.
