Über Numerologie-Zahlen
Modern numerology is usually traced to Pythagoras of Samos (c. 570–495 BCE), but the line is thinner than the brochures suggest. Pythagoras left no writings, and almost everything attributed to him comes from Neoplatonists such as Porphyry and Iamblichus writing seven or eight centuries later. The nine-column letter chart sold today as "Pythagorean" has no ancient precedent at all.
What is genuinely ancient is the practice of adding up a word. Greek letters carried numeric values — alpha to theta for 1 to 9, then iota 10, kappa 20, on through to 800 — and totalling them, isopsephy, is attested in graffiti at Pompeii, including a wall scratched for a woman "whose number is 545". Its Hebrew counterpart, gematria, works the same way. Assyriologists often cite an inscription of Sargon II, who ruled from 722 to 705 BCE, claiming that the wall of his new capital at Dur-Sharrukin was built 16,283 cubits long to match the value of his name.
The system in this tool, though, is a product of the American New Thought movement. L. Dow Balliett (1847–1929) of Atlantic City set out letter-to-number "vibrations" in a series of books published from around 1905, among them The Philosophy of Numbers, and is generally credited as the founder of modern numerology. The word itself is barely recorded in English before about 1907; its popularisation is usually credited to Julia Seton. Balliett's student Juno Jordan carried the method through mid-century California. The same enthusiasm for "vibration" produced parallel ventures — the radionics diagnostic devices of Ruth Drown among them — which American regulators and courts eventually treated as fraudulent.
None of this history is evidence that the numbers describe anyone. Numerology makes no prediction that has survived controlled testing and is classified as a pseudoscience. What does survive scrutiny is the arithmetic: digit reduction is the digital root, a real and well-understood function.
Wichtige Eigenschaften
- Numerology has no scientific or empirical support and is classified as a pseudoscience; everything on this page is offered as cultural and historical material, not as a prediction or a description of anyone.
- The Pythagorean chart assigns A–I the values 1–9, J–R the values 1–9 and S–Z the values 1–8. The rival Chaldean chart covers all 26 letters but assigns none of them the value 9.
- Reducing a number is taking its digital root: for n ≥ 1 the result equals 1 + ((n − 1) mod 9), so it is just n mod 9 with 9 standing in for 0.
- Because reduction depends only on the letter total, anagrams always share an expression number — ELVIS and LIVES both total 22 on the Pythagorean chart.
- Leaving 11, 22 and 33 unreduced is a 20th-century convention of practice, not a property of the arithmetic.
- The two published life-path methods can disagree once master numbers are kept: for 1 January 1962, summing every digit gives 20 → 2, while reducing month, day and year separately gives 1 + 1 + 9 = 11.
- The soul urge counts vowels only, and published charts disagree about Y (and occasionally W), so the same name legitimately yields different soul urge numbers in different books.
- The Greek and Hebrew letter-numeral systems behind isopsephy and gematria run 1–9, then 10–90, then 100 upward, so neither can produce the modern nine-column chart.
Wo sie auftauchen
- Jewish charitable gifts are often made in multiples of 18, because the letters of chai ("life") total 18 in gematria — a long-standing custom rather than a numerological prediction.
- The 666 of Revelation 13:18 is read by many scholars as isopsephy encoding a name, most often Nero Caesar written in Hebrew letters; some early manuscripts read 616 instead.
- Name-correction consultancies in India alter spellings on numerological advice; the television producer Ekta Kapoor’s long run of serial titles beginning with K is the most widely reported example. This is a belief acted upon, not an established effect.
- The Pythagorean tetractys — the triangular arrangement whose rows total 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 — carried number symbolism into Western philosophy, music theory and architecture.
- "Life path" quizzes are a staple of horoscope sites and self-help publishing, where the numbers are marketed as insight; no controlled test has supported the claims.
